The Health Benefits of Grass-fed Dairy
We at Traders Point Creamery strongly believe that cows raised on a grass fed diet and free to roam in the pasture, produce one of the most healthful foods known to man: milk. Most dairy products available today comes from cows that have their diets supplemented with grain in order to increase the amount of milk produced. Cows are ruminants, meaning their digestive systems are designed for a grass diet. When we deviate from what is 'natural’ we usually pay a penalty. In this case it is the nutritional value of the milk.
Dr. Peter Kunz, an owner of Traders Point Creamery, understands the linkage between nutrition and health. His studies over the past few years have convinced him that grass based dairy products can, and do, improve human health. This marriage of medicine and farming has resulted in our focus on the health benefits of a grass-based dairy, and an emphasis on health based products.
In a recent interview, Dr Kunz said, “We have discovered just how important grazing animals are to human health. When animals are raised on pasture and eat the rich greens, they acquire nutrients that are important to human health: omega-3, fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acids (CLA), beta-carotene and vitamins A and D. When people eat products such as: milk, meat and eggs from grass fed animals, research suggests that the risk of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancer is reduced."
"In milk all of these nutrients are found in the fat or cream. Much has been made recently about the dangers of fat in the diet. Fat, like anything else eaten in excess, can be detrimental; however, remember that fat delivers the nutrients that support and develop the immune system. For this reason our products for the most part contain whole milk."
"We do not homogenize our milk because the process changes the fat molecules so they cannot separate, as they would naturally. For those who are lactose intolerant, non-homogenized milk products seem to be easier to digest. In addition, a study done by Dr. Kurt Oster led to the conclusion that an enzyme created during the homogenization process initiates over 50% of all heart disease." "Some people confuse homogenization with pasteurization. We do pasteurize our milk because it is required by state law. We use a process called high temperature short time (HTST). This process kills the bacteria detrimental to human health but unlike the ultra pasteurization process, it does not kill those bacteria beneficial to human health.”
Our milk is certified organic by an independent certification authority. We do this so you don’t have to worry about consuming products containing growth hormones or pesticides.
